Big Idea Guru, LLC has traveled a winding path since its founding in 1984 by Dr. Michael Hudson. The business was originally established to provide strategic planning and business growth consulting services, analyze price movements in commodities markets, and deliver educational programs on price risk management to businesses operating within the food and agribusiness industry. At that time the company was originally known as Hudson Associates.

Between 1984 and 1989, Hudson Associates provided services to growing businesses primarily in the Midwest

Between 1984 and 1989, Hudson Associates provided services to growing businesses primarily in the Midwest, including family farms, food manufactures, and businesses connected with the futures and options markets. During that time Dr. Hudson was a frequent speaker at business and industry conferences, and participated actively in several professional meetings each year in the food and agribusiness arena. He attended the Harvard Business School’s Agribusiness Institute and was instrumental in the creation of the Food and Agribusiness Management program at the University of Illinois.

When Dr. Hudson moved to Cornell University in 1990 to become the first Bruce F. Failing Professor of Entrepreneurship and Personal Enterprise, the business increased its focus on growing companies and broadened its scope to a wide range of industries. Business planning and strategy became the dominant focus of the business as Dr. Hudson led the Entrepreneurship and Personal Enterprise program through a period of significant growth that expanded it from a college based program with two courses to a university-wide program with 14 courses in 7 colleges.

In the summer of 1994 Dr. Hudson left Cornell to pursue the business full-time and changed the name of the business to Beacon Leadership Group

In the summer of 1994 Dr. Hudson left Cornell to pursue the business full-time and changed the name of the business to Beacon Leadership Group. The focus shifted to working with entrepreneurs, growing business leaders, and independent professionals, with much of the work focusing on how to improve leadership at all levels of the business. Strategy continued to be an important area of emphasis, with practical, actionable outcomes being the primary contribution made to clients.

The business name was again changed in 2002 to reflect a core emphasis of Dr. Hudson’s work with growing companies…focusing on the everyday things that leaders needed to do in order to build successful companies. Between 2002 and 2006 the business served a wide range of clients, including growing businesses, government agencies, and non-profit institutions. During this time Dr. Hudson became a frequent speaker at conferences within the Credit Union Industry and began working with a number of credit union clients on strategic planning.

Early 2006 the business name was changed to Big Idea Guru, LLC - The change was a reflection of the work that Dr. Hudson most enjoys

Early in 2006 the business name was once again changed…this time to Big Idea Guru, LLC. The change was a reflection of the work that Dr. Hudson most enjoys and grew out of an increasing dissatisfaction with the confusion that people seemed to have about the word leadership, and the difficulty that people seemed to have in tying leadership work to specific outcomes. After discussions with several clients about the value that Dr. Hudson’s work brought to their businesses, it became apparent the there was a central theme of ideas, action, and results…Dr. Hudson helped them to develop and implement ideas that produced results, supported their taking action, and engaged them in securing results. Thus the name Big Idea Guru emerged and was adopted.

Today, the business focuses on building a community of idea leaders who share their insights and provide support to one another in building successful companies. Dr. Hudson spends his time doing what he most enjoys and what he does best…gathering information, processing it, and making it practical and useful. He speaks at 12-15 conferences each year, facilitates 10-12 planning sessions each year, and conducts seminars, boot camps, and ongoing support to a number of businesses in a variety of industries. The company markets Dr. Hudson’s information products, manages the Big Idea Gurus Club, and conducts a number of public and private seminars each year.
