Overcoming the "Philosophy of Fear"

PDF Print E-mail
Written by Phillip Van Hooser

I heard this from a business associate recently. I am convinced there is a definite need for the product/service I offer (or talent I possess). I am also convinced the current business environment, low interest rates, consumer demand and job market indicate I should act now. But, it just scares me to think about making a commitment.

Does this sound familiar to you? Are you entertaining or have you entertained similar thoughts? If so, you may have unwittingly given into the philosophy of fear. I think many intelligent, talented, capable people miss golden opportunities for no reason other than submission to vague, undefined fears. It has happened to me in the past. That is why I adopted a new professional philosophy for myself. If it scares me professionally, I'll do it--at least once!

Consider the following questions. Be honest with the answers you commit to.

Am I afraid because I never was taught to do this thing? If so, what self-education steps might I take to prepare myself? Who do I know that might be willing to mentor/coach me? How much am I willing to invest (time, effort and money) in my education?

Am I afraid because I don't fully understand this thing? If so, what research information is available to me? Who might I talk with who has experience with this thing? How might I go about acquiring some preliminary experience?

Am I afraid because I fear I might fail? If so, what is the worst thing that could happen to me if I did fail? What skills, talents and resources would I have to fall back on? What potential rewards am I willing to forego because of my fear?

Lost in the Fog?

PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dr. Michael Hudson

It was 3 am when I headed out the door and headed off to BWI for a quick three-day trip to Monterey where I was speaking at a credit union conference.

My normal two hour drive to the airport serves as valuable thought time, and is usually quite enjoyable. But this morning, not only was the hour unGodly, the weather was even...
